The details

Short answer: buy the 5000 series if your work tops out at Cat 6A. Buy the 8000 series only if you certify Cat 8 / Class I/II (2 GHz) or need Level VI / 2G accuracy. Per Fluke's DSX datasheet, the DSX-8000 runs a full Cat 6A autotest in 8 seconds vs 10 seconds on the DSX-5000. That's about 2 seconds a link, which adds up on very large jobs but rarely justifies the price on its own.

Price gap: new, a DSX2-5000 was $13,442.94–$14,651.87 and a DSX2-8000 $14,999.95–$16,562.89. Used, the gap is wider: original DSX-5000s listed from $3,000, while used DSX-8000s were $11,000–$11,495. Renting shows the same split: $475/week for a DSX-5000 vs $925/week for a DSX-8000 in the US. Calibration also costs more on the 8000: $955 vs $660 at Custom Calibration.

Middle ground: rent a DSX-8000 for the occasional Cat 8 job (DSX rental rates) and own a 5000 for everything else. Also see DSX-8000 vs DSX2-8000 and best cable certifier.

FAQ

Can a DSX-5000 certify Cat 8?
No. The DSX-5000 and DSX2-5000 test to 1 GHz (Cat 6A / Class EA). Cat 8 / Class I/II needs the 2 GHz DSX-8000 or DSX2-8000.
Is the DSX-8000 faster than the DSX-5000?
Slightly. Fluke's datasheet lists a full two-way Cat 6A autotest at 8 seconds on the DSX-8000 vs 10 seconds on the DSX-5000.
How much more does a DSX-8000 cost than a DSX-5000?
New, the DSX2-8000 listed at $14,999.95 to $16,562.89 vs $13,442.94 to $14,651.87 for the DSX2-5000. Used, original DSX-8000s were $11,000 to $11,495, while used DSX-5000s started at $3,000.
