Updated 2026-10-225 modelsEvery price links to its source

Short answer

Handheld OTDRs: about $3,800–$10,400 new. Rent from $288/week.

A professional handheld OTDR costs about $3,800–$10,400 new for single-mode or quad field units, and $14,000–$16,000 for an enterprise OTDR like the Fluke OptiFiber Pro. The cheapest firm new price we found was $3,795 for an EXFO MaxTester 715D. Older used units like the VIAVI SmartOTDR E126A were $2,199–$2,799. Renting starts at $288/week, and calibration runs about $405–$550 a year for common models.

The details

What drives the price: wavelengths (single-mode only vs quad SM/MM), live-fiber (1650 nm) ports for PON, dynamic range, and software like EXFO iOLM. Compare the VIAVI T-BERD 2000: $4,774.76 for a two-wavelength kit vs $9,666.34 for the quad SM/MM kit.

Used isn't always cheaper. Refurbished EXFO 730D units were listed at $8,995–$9,895, above a $5,500 new 730D listing, so price-check before buying. If you test fiber only a few weeks a year, renting usually wins; see OTDR rental cost and best OTDR. Very cheap "mini OTDRs" on marketplaces are a different class of tool, and we don't track them.
